How to Private Label an Automatic Cat Litter Box

Private labeling is the path from “selling generic Chinese cat litter boxes” to “building your own brand in the category”. Done right, it turns a commodity purchase into a defensible business with pricing power, repeat customers and long-term equity. Done wrong, it adds cost without creating differentiation and leaves you selling the same box as 20 other brands on Amazon. This article explains the end-to-end private labeling process for automatic cat litter boxes, written from inside the factory by Eviehome (Hefei Ecologie Vie Home Technology Co., Ltd.), based in Hefei, China, which runs private-label programmes for distributors in more than 30 countries.

What private labeling actually means

Private labeling (also called “white labeling” or “ODM customization”) means taking an existing factory product and putting your own brand on it. The factory keeps the underlying design and manufactures the product. You put your logo, your packaging, your manual, your app branding and optionally your firmware localization on the finished unit. The end customer sees your brand, not the factory’s.

Private labeling is NOT the same as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). With OEM, you design the product from scratch and the factory builds it. With private label, the product design is the factory’s and you wrap it in your brand.

For first-time B2B brands entering the category, private labeling is the right starting point: fast time to market, no tooling investment, lower MOQ, proven product. OEM comes later once you have market traction and want a truly unique product.

The 8 layers of private labeling you can customize

When you private-label an automatic cat litter box from a Chinese factory, these are the 8 elements you can make your own:

1. Logo on the product housing

Applied via pad printing, laser engraving, silk screen, or a flat sticker. Pad printing is the most durable (wears off after 3 to 5 years of use). Laser engraving is premium (permanent, slightly more expensive, USD 0.50 to 1.00 per unit). Silk screen is the cheapest (USD 0.20 to 0.50). Stickers are the cheapest of all but also the least durable and are a signal of cheap branding.

2. Product color

Factory standard colors (white, gray, black, beige) are usually available at no extra cost on MOQ 500 units. Custom Pantone matching adds USD 2 to USD 4 per unit and usually raises the MOQ to 1 000 units because the injection line has to be cleaned and colored resin has to be ordered in a specific batch.

3. Packaging artwork

Full custom color box with your brand, your marketing copy, your certifications, your barcode. Design file must be provided as CMYK vector PDF. Setup cost USD 300 to 800 one-time. Per-unit packaging cost is similar to the factory’s generic box (USD 8 to 10). This is where most private-label buyers put their creative energy because the packaging is the first thing the customer sees on the Amazon listing or the retail shelf.

4. Inner packaging and accessories

Foam shape, accessory bag, litter scoop, carbon filters, power cable, warranty card, quick start guide. All of these can be co-branded. A thoughtful unboxing experience is a competitive advantage in the premium segment.

5. Manual and quick start guide

Your layout, your translation, your languages. Eviehome supports 8 languages at no extra cost: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish. Additional languages are USD 50 to USD 150 per language translation fee. The manual is where your brand voice comes through in the post-purchase experience.

6. Mobile app branding

Your logo, your color scheme, your product photos inside the app. Most factories use the Tuya smart home platform which offers white-labeling: your logo in the app header, your brand color as the accent, your app icon. White-label Tuya is the fastest private label path. A fully custom native app costs USD 15 000 to USD 40 000 one-time and is usually worth it only for brands planning 10 000+ unit annual volume.

7. Firmware personalization

Default device name on the WiFi access point (e.g., “MyBrand Cat Box” instead of “Tuya Device”), default cleaning schedule, custom notification strings, optional feature toggles. Firmware personalization is a one-time engineering cost (USD 500 to USD 2 000) plus a small per-unit flashing cost.

8. Regional power plug

UK, EU, US, AU plug types are standard. The factory ships the correct adapter based on your destination market. Extra plug types (BR, IN, ZA) are possible with a small per-unit cost and usually require a new local safety certification.

The end-to-end private labeling process at Eviehome

Here is how a typical private-label project runs from first inquiry to shipped container:

  1. Day 1 to 3: inquiry and product selection. Buyer sends an RFQ specifying the cat litter box model, target volume and basic customization (logo, color, packaging). Eviehome responds with a quote and a timeline.
  2. Day 4 to 10: sample approval. Buyer orders a sample of the factory’s generic version of the model. Tests it, approves the underlying product.
  3. Day 11 to 20: artwork and branding kit. Buyer sends the logo file, packaging artwork, brand guidelines. Eviehome’s designer creates a mockup for approval.
  4. Day 21 to 25: pre-production sample. One or two units with the final branding applied, shipped to the buyer for final approval.
  5. Day 26: buyer signs off. Proforma invoice finalized, 30 percent deposit wired.
  6. Day 27 to 55: production. Mass production runs on the factory line. Custom packaging is printed in parallel. Firmware is flashed with the brand strings.
  7. Day 56 to 60: quality control and pre-shipment inspection. Third-party AQL 2.5 inspection. Rework any defects.
  8. Day 61: shipment. Balance payment against bill of lading copy. Container departs Ningbo.
  9. Day 62 to 100: ocean freight. Depending on destination port.
  10. Day 101 to 108: customs clearance + last mile delivery to the buyer’s warehouse.

Total: 100 to 110 days from first inquiry to received inventory for a typical private-label order.

How much does private labeling cost on top of wholesale?

CustomizationOne-time costPer-unit cost
Logo (pad printing)USD 0USD 0.30 to 0.80
Standard factory colorUSD 0USD 0
Custom Pantone colorUSD 500 to 1 500USD 2 to 4
Custom packaging (design + film)USD 300 to 800USD 0 (same as generic)
Manual in 2 languagesUSD 0USD 0
White-label Tuya app brandingUSD 0 to 500USD 0
Native custom mobile appUSD 15 000 to 40 000USD 0 to 2 (amortized)
Firmware personalizationUSD 500 to 2 000USD 0 to 1
Regional power plug (additional)USD 300 to 800USD 0.50 to 1

A typical private-label first order with logo, custom packaging, multi-language manual and white-label Tuya app adds USD 300 to USD 1 000 in one-time setup and USD 0.30 to USD 1.00 per unit to the generic wholesale price. Very affordable relative to the branding value you capture.

Mistakes to avoid when private labeling

  • Over-investing in customization before validating the product. Your first order should be a light customization (logo + packaging) to validate that the underlying product sells in your market. Deeper customization (native app, new mould) comes on order 2 or 3.
  • Under-investing in packaging. The packaging is where brand differentiation is visible on Amazon and retail shelves. Do not ship generic brown boxes with a sticker.
  • Ignoring the Amazon brand registry. Register your brand on Amazon Brand Registry BEFORE you ship the first container. Without registry, anyone can hijack your listing.
  • Skipping the firmware personalization. Default device name “Tuya Device ABC123” on the WiFi SSID makes your brand invisible to the end customer during pairing. Invest in firmware strings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the MOQ for a private-label cat litter box at Eviehome?

500 units per SKU for standard customization (logo, packaging, manual in up to 8 languages, white-label Tuya app). 1 000 units for custom Pantone color matching. 2 000 to 3 000 units for OEM with new injection moulding. See our MOQ article for the full framework.

Can I use my own native mobile app instead of Tuya?

Yes. You provide the app binary or the source code and Eviehome’s firmware team integrates the communication protocol. Typical cost for the integration is USD 3 000 to USD 8 000 one-time plus the normal firmware personalization fee.

Who owns the design after private labeling?

With private labeling, the factory retains ownership of the underlying product design (the cat litter box hardware). You own the branding layer (logo, packaging, manual, app skin). If you want to own the hardware design exclusively, you need to move from private label to OEM with new tooling, which is a larger investment. See our OEM vs ODM guide for the full distinction.
